Welcome to the website of World’s Ecologist Felix Latzo: Your Space to find out about Ecology and Sustainability
On this website, I’m dedicated to fostering deep environmental awareness and inspiring sustainable actions for a greener, more responsible future. I firmly believe that ecology is vital — both in the digital world and the physical one — to protect our planet and ensure a dignified life for future generations.
What Is Environmentalism and Why Is It Vital Today?
Environmentalism is a philosophy and movement that advocates for the protection of our planet, the conservation of nature, and the adoption of sustainable practices. Its impact is global, influencing policies, technologies, and daily habits.
Electricity
The internet is the 6th largest global polluter, consuming 7% of the world’s electricity. Every search, every click, leaves an energy footprint.
Direct Impact
More than 60% of our carbon footprint comes from everyday habits such as household energy use and transportation.
Annual Consumption
If everyone lived like the average citizen of a developed country, we would need 2.5 Earths to meet our yearly resource demands.
The health of our planet is directly tied to our daily decisions. From what we eat to how we interact with technology — every choice matters.
Environmental Awareness Through Time
«A reforestation project is urgently needed» these words appeared in the very famous Spanish language newspaper «El Mundo» in their Monday, April 27th 1987 edition.
Words that I expressed to a journalist of that newspaper. The picture in the article is yours truly in 1987.
Reforestation Project Urgently Needed
The Ministry of Agriculture has warned that the environmental degradation affecting the Lempa River Basin is the result of a historic destructive process, mainly involving the loss of soil, flora, and fauna.
Unless a serious reforestation project is implemented, the situation will remain the same—or even worsen—warned Engineer Adonis Moreira, Director General of the Center for Natural Resources (CENREN).
According to Moreira, millions of cubic meters of mud and sand accumulate every year in the Cerrón Grande Hydroelectric Complex due to ongoing deforestation. This sediment buildup, known as siltation, shortens the reservoir’s lifespan.
“It’s essential to raise awareness about the importance of national reforestation programs promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock through CENREN. These programs offer social and ecological benefits that will be the best legacy for future generations,” Moreira stated.
He added that it’s often only during times of crisis that people recognize the true value of natural resources, which is why concrete actions must be taken to recover the forests lost due to poor land use.
In a related initiative, environmentalist Dr. Félix Latzo will launch a project to encourage primary, secondary, and university students to plant and care for trees, as a practical solution to the country’s growing deforestation problem.

The Amazon Now Absorbs Less CO₂
The Amazon rainforest has long acted as a major carbon sink. However, since 1980, the tree mortality rate in the region has significantly increased, reducing its ability to absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂), according to a report published in Nature.
An international team of scientists, led by the University of Leeds (UK), revealed that the Amazon has lost its net carbon absorption capacity. From a peak of two billion tons of carbon absorbed annually in the 1990s, this capacity has now been halved. For the first time, fossil fuel emissions in Latin America are surpassing the Amazon’s ability to absorb them.
The findings, based on 30 years of research, show that in past decades the Amazon acted as a major carbon sink, helping to slow the pace of climate change. However, recent analysis of forest dynamics reveals a sharp increase in tree mortality rates.
“Tree mortality rates have increased by more than a third since the mid-1980s, and this is affecting the Amazon’s ability to store carbon,” said Roel Brienen of the University of Leeds.
According to experts, the initial increase in atmospheric CO₂ — a key ingredient for photosynthesis — led to a growth phase in Amazon trees. But the excess carbon has had unexpected consequences. Recent droughts and unusually high temperatures in the region may also be playing a role in this decline.
Awareness Phase
It is undeniable that, of all the aspects mentioned, the most complex is the Awareness Phase, as it requires generating an attitude that becomes internalized in a person’s psyche and has the power to guide them toward the desired positive behavior.
According to my thesis generating this kind of awareness requires two basic, fundamental, and central elements: a) To start the teaching process during childhood and b) To develope that process during at least a couple of years.
Another advisable characteristics at other levels:
- Clear, truthful, and accessible information:
People need to understand environmental reality based on scientific and ethical foundations. Information must be understandable, free of unnecessary technical jargon, and shared openly to help people grasp the causes, consequences, and solutions to current ecological problems. - Emotional connection with nature:
Knowledge alone is not enough — we must also feel. Environmental awareness is strengthened when there is an emotional bond with the natural world. Promoting direct experiences with nature, encouraging respect for living beings, and cultivating ecological empathy are key to awakening a committed and lasting attitude.
Environmental Method: «Let’s Plant America»
Example of Application of the Environmental Educational Method “Let’s Plant America”
Children with their newly planted sapling

Group in the first year of the tree growth

After two years of the tree growth

This time, the children have to raise their arms because the little tree is now taller than they are.
Every small action contributes. This monitoring took place at a multicultural school in the Washington, D.C. area, the capital of the United States of America. The group included children of different races and backgrounds.
The above aspect of the method is an arborization phase. But the method also has a reforestation phase:
Reforestation Phase
This phase should be carried out by high school students and coordinated by the administrations of the participating educational institutions, together with the local governments (municipalities) to which these schools belong. These local authorities will be responsible for identifying municipal properties in need of reforestation.
Students will conduct the extracurricular reforestation activity on those municipal lands.
Unlike the Arborization Phase, students do not use a Workbook. Instead, they work with a specially designed poster that includes spaces for an annual photo sequence over a two-year period following the year of planting.

«Fruit Tree’s Highway»
Fruit Trees to Be Planted Along the Highway to Cerro Verde
By Juan Carlos Barahona
More than 13 kilometers of the Highway from Sonsonate to Cerro Verde will be transformed into a “fruit tree highway”, thanks to the initiative of Salvadoran environmentalist Félix Latzo, Nobel Peace Prize nominee. The project has received support from the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) and the Road Conservation Fund (FOVIAL).
As part of the MOP Verde (Green MOP) project, thousands of fruit trees will be planted on both sides of the Highway. The goal is to improve air quality, provide fruit for residents and passersby, and promote environmental protection.
“This is the first time in the world that something like this will be done — a fruit tree highway. We’re going to plant different types of fruit trees. Thank God our tropical country is blessed with a wide variety of fruit trees, and this will serve as an example for the world,” said Latzo.
The University of the East (UNIVO), private companies, and students from the San Isidro Canton Educational Complex in Izalco, Sonsonate, have joined the initiative and are participating in the planting.
Avocado, guava, paterna, and mango trees, among others, are some of the species to be planted, as they adapt easily to the local climate and grow with little difficulty.
According to FOVIAL sources, the project will be carried out in multiple phases. The first phase will cover three kilometers of the Highway, as part of the total 13+ kilometers to be intervened.
